In school-based mentoring programs, positive mentor appraisals foster mentee relationship quality. Jointly determined activities enhance this positive feedback loop, improving youth outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Education
- Sociology
Background:
- School-based mentoring programs are popular for supporting student social-emotional and academic success.
- High-quality mentoring relationships are crucial for improving youth outcomes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the development of mentor-mentee relationship quality over time.
- To examine how relationship development varies based on activity selection approaches (mentor-directed, program-directed, jointly determined).
Main Methods:
- Utilized a random-intercepts crossed-lagged panel model.
- Analyzed data from 47,699 youth across three time points over one school year (2014-2018).
- Included participants from Big Brothers Big Sisters school-based mentoring programs.
Main Results:
- Mentors' positive relationship appraisals predicted subsequent positive mentee appraisals.
- Jointly determined activities showed a reciprocal relationship where positive appraisals at one time point led to positive appraisals at the next.
- This suggests a positive feedback loop in relationship quality development.
Conclusions:
- School-based mentoring programs should encourage joint decision-making between mentors and mentees.
- Supporting collaborative activity selection can enhance the quality of mentoring relationships.
- This approach may strengthen the positive impact of mentoring on youth outcomes.
