According to some social psychologists, people tend to overemphasize internal factors as explanations—or attributions—for the behavior of other people. They tend to assume that the behavior of another person is a trait of that person, and to underestimate the power of the situation on the behavior of others. They tend to fail to recognize when the behavior of another is due to situational variables, and thus to the person’s state. This erroneous assumption is...

Surveys

16.2K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

Causes of Similarity-Dissimilarity Effect

The similarity-dissimilarity effect, a fundamental concept in social psychology, explains how interpersonal similarities and differences influence attraction and social interactions. This effect is supported by three key psychological perspectives: balance theory, social comparison theory, and consensual validation.Balance Theory and Cognitive ConsistencyBalance theory, developed by Fritz Heider, posits that individuals seek cognitive consistency in their relationships. When two people share...

Social Proof

Social proof is a form of persuasion based on comparison and conformity. People compare their behavior and actions to what others are doing and will change to conform to do what their peers do.

Summary

The other-ethnicity effect (OEE), where people recognize same-ethnicity faces better than different-ethnicity faces, remains consistent regardless of individual face recognition ability. Social contact does not influence this effect.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Social Psychology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Individuals exhibit an 'other-ethnicity effect' (OEE), recognizing same-ethnicity faces better than different-ethnicity faces.
  • This effect is often attributed to differential experience and familiarity with faces.
  • Significant variability exists in face recognition abilities within populations for both own- and other-ethnicity faces.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if the magnitude of the OEE varies with individual differences in face recognition ability.
  • To examine the influence of social contact on the OEE across diverse performance levels.
  • To assess the consistency of the OEE across a wide spectrum of face recognition skills.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited large-scale multinational samples to assess face recognition performance.
  • Measured the OEE across the full range of own- and other-ethnicity face recognition abilities.
  • Included measures of social contact to analyze its potential moderating role.

Main Results:

  • The magnitude of the OEE was found to be remarkably consistent across all levels of within-population face recognition ability.
  • This consistency held true for both own- and other-ethnicity face recognition performance.
  • Social contact measures did not significantly affect the observed pattern of the OEE.

Conclusions:

  • The OEE is a persistent feature of face recognition, largely independent of individual recognition skill levels.
  • Findings have implications for models of face recognition, particularly concerning individuals with exceptional or poor recognition abilities.
  • The study suggests that factors beyond experience and familiarity, or their interaction with performance variability, may underlie the OEE.
