Solvents

68.1K
A solvent is a substance, most often a liquid, that can dissolve other substances. Here, the substance being dissolved is called a solute. When a solvent and a solute combine, they form a solution - a homogenous mixture of both the solvent and the solute. Water is a universal biological solvent. Its polar structure allows it to dissolve many other polar compounds. The ability of water to dissolve is governed by a balance between water molecules binding to each other and binding to the solute.

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Environmental Science

Background:

  • Printed electronics fabrication relies heavily on solvents, many posing health, safety, and environmental risks.
  • Current solvent usage in printing and coating processes within the electronics industry presents significant challenges.
  • The need for sustainable and safer alternatives in electronic manufacturing is increasingly critical.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a straightforward tool for identifying functional and "green" replacement solvents for printed electronics.
  • To provide a systematic method for selecting sustainable solvents with comparable dissolution capacities to existing ones.
  • To address the health, safety, and environmental concerns associated with traditional solvents in electronics fabrication.

Main Methods:

  • Organizing a comprehensive solvent database based on Hansen solubility parameters, ink properties, and sustainability metrics.
  • Employing systematic iteration to suggest green alternative solvents.
  • Conducting a case study on a multi-solute ink for light-emitting electrochemical cells.

Main Results:

  • Successfully developed and demonstrated a green solvent selection tool.
  • Identified two benign alternative solvents to replace a non-desired solvent in a high-performance light-emitting electrochemical cell ink.
  • Validated the tool's efficacy in finding suitable green solvent replacements.

Conclusions:

  • The developed tool facilitates the straightforward identification of functional and sustainable solvent alternatives.
  • The successful replacement of a hazardous solvent with benign options highlights the tool's practical applicability.
  • This innovation contributes to safer and more environmentally responsible practices in the printed electronics industry.
