Preterm White Matter Injury: A Prospective Cohort Study

Preterm white matter injury (WMI) occurred in 37.1% of neonates. Hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus and apnea of prematurity were linked to increased risk of periventricular leukomalacia (PVL).

Conclusions:
- Significant WMI affects approximately one-third of very preterm neonates, a rate comparable to developed countries.
- Specific factors like patent ductus arteriosus and apnea of prematurity are associated with PVL, guiding targeted preventative strategies.
