[When is resection of liver metastases indicated?]

Indications for resection: radical removal of the primary tumor, extrahepatic metastases are not manifest, unilateral involvement of the liver. Because of the increasing safety also of wide resections (lethality 0-8%) and the good quality of life after resection the range of indications has been extended: bilateral operations, intra- and extrahepatic dilatations, metastases at the portal or venous hilus, palliative resections, lymphectomy. Primary tumors: colon and rectum, kidney, corpus uteri, sarcomas and carcinoids of the gastrointestinal tract, selected cases of all kinds.
