Cutibacterium acnes prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) can be successfully treated with antibiotics alone. Prolonged blood culture incubation may aid diagnosis of this rare but serious condition.
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Cardiology
- Microbiology
Background:
- Prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) is a serious complication following valve replacement surgery.
- Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes), previously Propionibacterium acnes, is an opportunistic pathogen increasingly recognized as a cause of PVE.
- C. acnes PVE is often associated with biofilm formation, contributing to treatment challenges.
