Radiological Investigation I: X-ray and CT01:30

Radiological Investigation I: X-ray and CT

596
Radiological investigations, including X-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans, are critical for diagnosing and evaluating various medical conditions. These imaging techniques provide valuable insights into the body's internal structures, aiding in the detection of abnormalities, assessment of disease progression, and development of treatment strategies. This article delves into two primary radiological investigations, chest X-rays and CT scans, outlining their purpose, procedures, and...

Restorative Care01:19

Restorative Care

2.1K
Restorative care is provided once a patient has been discharged from a healthcare facility and requires additional services. The additional services include home care, rehabilitation programs, and extended care. Restorative care centers help the patient regain their previous level of functioning or acquire a new level of functioning due to the incapacitating effects of a disease or a disability. It aims to assist patients in enhancing their quality of life by encouraging independence,...

Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan

205
Radiological investigations are paramount in the diagnosis and management of various pulmonary diseases. Two essential investigations are the Pulmonary Angiogram and the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan.
Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...

Patient-centered Care01:13

Patient-centered Care

2.5K
Patient-centered care involves delivering care beyond inpatient hospitalization. Reflective practice can enhance a patient-centered approach. Reflective practice is a process of reasoning that considers all aspects of the present situation, including practicalities, learning from personal practice, and consideration of patient needs. Patients appreciate care decisions made while considering their input. Involving the patient in their care provides the patient with a sense of contribution rather...

Radiological Investigation II: MRI and Ventilation Perfusion Scan

266
Description
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ventilation Perfusion Scans are two radiological investigations that offer detailed diagnostic images of the body, particularly lung structures.
MRI
MRI uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals to distinguish between normal and abnormal tissues. This technology provides a more detailed diagnostic image than CT scans, enabling it to characterize pulmonary nodules, stage bronchogenic carcinoma, and evaluate inflammatory activity in...

Methods of Documentation VI: Case Management Model

666
The case management model is a multidisciplinary approach that involves healthcare professionals from diverse disciplines, such as physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, and pharmacists, working collaboratively to address the various needs of patients. Each healthcare professional brings unique expertise and perspectives, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the patient's condition and tailoring treatment plans accordingly.
For example, a patient with a chronic...

Area of Science:

  • Medical education
  • Physician well-being
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Physician wellness and burnout mitigation are critical, especially given recent global stressors like the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Radiologists face unique challenges impacting their personal and professional well-being.
  • Storytelling is explored as a novel self-care strategy for this demographic.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of storytelling as a self-care practice for radiologists.
  • To assess the impact of a virtual storytelling workshop on physician well-being.
  • To evaluate shifts in empathy and emotional processing among participants.

Main Methods:

  • A virtual storytelling workshop, "Storytelling Geek Week," was conducted over 5 days.
  • Nineteen members of the Association of University Radiologists (AUR) participated.
  • Anonymous pre- and post-workshop electronic surveys were used to gather feedback.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant increase in participants' well-being was observed (P=0.017).
  • All post-workshop respondents recommended the workshop.
  • Participants reported improved emotional processing, increased connection, empathy, hope, and gratitude.

Conclusions:

  • Storytelling workshops positively impact physician well-being and reduce burnout.
  • This intervention can enhance empathy and foster a sense of community.
  • Storytelling offers a valuable tool for supporting healthcare professionals during demanding periods.
