Background:

  • The long-term prognosis of polymorphic light eruption (PLE) is not well-established.
  • Understanding the disease course is crucial for patient management and counseling.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the long-term course and predict disease progression in patients with polymorphic light eruption (PLE).

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire was mailed to 205 patients diagnosed with PLE between 1990 and 2018.
  • Patients reported on symptom normalization, improvement, stability, or worsening over time.
  • Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to estimate disease persistence.

Main Results:

  • Of 97 respondents, 74% still suffered from PLE after 20 years.
  • Symptoms resolved in 41% of females and 24% of males, with a mean resolution time of 17.4 and 11.8 years, respectively.

  • While symptoms often improve or resolve, a substantial proportion of patients experience persistent disease.
