[The research progress of cytomegalovirus corneal endotheliitis]

Cytomegalovirus(CMV) corneal endotheliitis is an inflammatory disease of corneal endothelium caused by CMV infection. It mainly occurs in middle-aged and elderly immunocompetent people and has a relatively high incidence in Asia. It is characterized by localized corneal edema, coin-shaped or linear keratic precipitates and mild anterior chamber reaction, possibly with raised intraocular pressure or a history of recurrent anterior uveitis. The pathogenesis of this disease is not yet clear. Previous studies suggested it was related to viral infection and immune response; Therefore, the current treatment is empirically using antiviral agents combined with topical corticosteroids. Making an accurate early diagnosis and continuous antiviral therapy are crucial in controlling disease progression and preserving corneal endothelial function. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2021, 57: 624-629).
