Summary

Carotenodermia, a harmless yellow skin condition, can occur from eating too many carotenoid-rich vegetables. This often happens during weight loss diets and is not a sign of serious illness.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Nutrition Science

Background:

  • Carotenodermia is a benign skin condition resulting from excessive beta-carotene intake.
  • It is characterized by a yellow-orange discoloration of the skin, particularly the palms and soles.

Observation:

  • Four cases of carotenodermia are presented, linked to high consumption of carotenoid-rich foods.
  • Patients included individuals on weight loss diets, a high-tomato diet, and a young child with commercial meal intake.
  • No underlying diseases associated with high carotenemia levels were identified.

Findings:

  • Carotenodermia presented in diverse age groups and dietary patterns.
  • Associated symptoms like irregular menses were attributed to weight loss or psychiatric factors, not carotenoid toxicity.
  • The study suggests other dietary components, not just carotenoids, might play a role.

Implications:

  • Carotenodermia is a reversible condition with no proven toxicity from carotenoids.
  • It highlights the importance of considering dietary patterns in dermatological presentations.
  • Further research is needed to understand the role of other dietary factors in carotenodermia.
