Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if high red meat intake exacerbates colitis and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.
  • To assess the impact of red meat on intestinal microbiota composition and gut barrier function.

Main Methods:

  • Mice were fed varying levels of red meat for 8 weeks, followed by 16S rRNA sequencing of colonic contents.
  • Colitis was induced using 3% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in mice.
  • The study evaluated colitis severity, inflammatory cytokine levels, and colon barrier integrity markers (ZO-1, claudin, occludin).

Main Results:

  • High red meat intake led to gut microbiota dysbiosis, decreasing beneficial bacteria (e.g., Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group, Faecalibaculum, Blautia, Dubosiella) and increasing harmful bacteria (e.g., Bacteroides, Alistipes).

  • High red meat consumption can increase susceptibility to colitis by altering the gut microbiota and compromising the intestinal barrier.
  • Dietary modification, specifically reducing red meat intake, is recommended for the prevention of IBD.
