Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Rare Tumors

Background:

  • Neurofibromas are benign nerve sheath tumors with widespread distribution.
  • Laryngeal neurofibromas are exceptionally rare, particularly in infants.
  • Previous literature reports only nine cases of laryngeal neurofibromas in children under nine years old.

Observation:

  • A 2-year-old boy presented with inspiratory stridor, a symptom of upper airway obstruction.
  • Diagnostic evaluation revealed a subglottic mass.
  • The patient underwent surgical removal of the tumor via laryngofissure.

Findings:

  • Pathological examination confirmed the subglottic mass as a neurofibroma.
  • This represents the first reported case of a subglottic neurofibroma in an infant.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Complete surgical excision was achieved through laryngofissure.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the understanding of rare pediatric airway tumors.
    • Laryngofissure is a viable surgical approach for subglottic neurofibromas in infants.
    • Further research into the pathogenesis and management of infantile laryngeal neurofibromas is warranted.
