Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Neoadjuvant Therapy

Background:

  • Surgery is the primary treatment for thymoma.
  • Complete resection (R0) significantly impacts patient prognosis.
  • Locally advanced thymomas (Masaoka-Koga stages III-IVa) present challenges for complete surgical removal due to invasion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review recent advancements in induction therapy for locally advanced thymoma.
  • To provide a comprehensive overview of neoadjuvant strategies to facilitate complete tumor resection.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of recent studies on induction therapy for thymoma.

  • Induction therapy can downstage locally advanced thymomas.
  • Neoadjuvant treatment can increase the rate of R0 resection in challenging cases.
  • Specific induction regimens show efficacy in facilitating surgical resection.

Conclusions:

  • Induction therapy is a viable strategy for improving surgical resectability in advanced thymoma.
  • Neoadjuvant treatment offers a potential pathway to achieve complete resection and improve outcomes.
  • Further research is warranted to optimize induction protocols for thymoma management.
