Summary

The Active Sentry handpiece is as safe and effective as the Ozil handpiece for Centurion phacoemulsification cataract surgery. It offers the advantage of maintaining lower intraocular pressure during the procedure.

Background:

Phacoemulsification cataract surgery is a common procedure.
The Centurion Vision System is an advanced platform for cataract surgery.
Handpiece technology plays a crucial role in surgical outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the safety and efficacy of the Active Sentry handpiece versus the Ozil handpiece.
To evaluate intraoperative and postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing cataract surgery with the Centurion Vision System.

Main Methods:

A prospective observational study involving 204 patients with uncomplicated cataracts.
Patients were randomized to receive either the Ozil handpiece (n=101) or the Active Sentry handpiece (n=103).
Intraoperative factors (pain, surgeon comfort, energy use, active surge mitigation) and postoperative outcomes (visual acuity, corneal edema) were analyzed.

Main Results:

Patient pain perception and postoperative outcomes were comparable between the two handpieces.
Surgeons reported greater comfort with the Ozil handpiece for anterior chamber entry and hard nucleus emulsification.
Mean cumulative dissipated energy was similar, and active surge mitigation usage varied by cataract type.

Conclusions:

The Active Sentry handpiece is a safe and effective alternative to the Ozil handpiece for Centurion phacoemulsification.
The Active Sentry handpiece may offer an advantage by operating at lower intraocular pressure levels.
Both handpieces demonstrate comparable clinical outcomes in uncomplicated cataract surgery.
