    Summary

General practitioners (GPs) support HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) but face barriers like insufficient training and knowledge gaps. Improving GP training and institutional support is crucial for wider PrEP adoption and HIV prevention.

    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Infectious Disease Prevention
    • General Practice Medicine

    Background:

    • Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a key HIV prevention strategy available in France since 2016.
    • While initial PrEP prescriptions occur in specialized centers, general practitioners (GPs) can manage renewals and follow-up.
    • Understanding barriers faced by GPs is vital for optimizing HIV prevention efforts.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the opinions and current practices of French general practitioners regarding PrEP.
    • To identify barriers hindering GPs from prescribing and monitoring PrEP.
    • To inform public health strategies for increasing PrEP accessibility and uptake.

    Main Methods:

    • A descriptive study surveyed general practitioners across France.
    • The survey focused on their views and practices concerning PrEP.
    • Data was collected between August and October 2018.

    Main Results:

    • Of 351 respondents, 88.9% supported PrEP, but only 6.3% had prescribed it and 12.8% managed follow-up.
    • Key barriers for non-prescribers included lack of training (90.6%), perceived low patient risk (29.8%), and insufficient knowledge of patient sexuality (27.1%).
    • Lack of prior prescription experience was a barrier to follow-up (33.3%).

    Conclusions:

    • GPs express interest in providing PrEP but face significant obstacles.
    • Enhanced training through continuing medical education is essential for GPs.
    • Institutional changes are needed to support GPs in PrEP management and improve overall HIV prevention.
