Purpose of the Study:

  • Determine the revision rate after pediatric intracapsular tonsillectomy.
  • Identify patient factors associated with increased revision surgery probability.
  • Report the incidence of tonsillar hemorrhage post-revision.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case-control study of pediatric patients (ages 2-20).
  • Analyzed 169 revision cases and 169 matched controls.
  • Data collected from January 2004 to December 2018.

Main Results:

  • Observed a 1.39% revision rate in 12,145 intracapsular tonsillectomies.
  • Tonsillitis was the primary indication for revision.
  • Younger age (P < .001) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (P = .006) were significant risk factors for revision.

Conclusions:

  • Children under 4 and those with GERD are at higher risk for revision tonsillectomy.
  • These risk factors should guide the selection of tonsillectomy techniques in pediatric patients.
