Motor and Sensory Areas of the Cortex01:14

Motor and Sensory Areas of the Cortex

5.2K
The cerebral cortex, the brain's outermost layer, is pivotal in processing complex cognitive tasks, emotions, and various sensory inputs and executing voluntary motor activities. This intricate structure is divided into three primary functional areas: the motor areas, sensory areas, and association areas.
Motor Areas
The motor areas located in the frontal lobe are central to controlling voluntary movements. This region is further subdivided into the primary motor cortex and the premotor cortex....

Summary

This study reveals novel connections from the dorsal subiculum (dSUB) to the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), identifying the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) as a primary target. These findings refine our understanding of hippocampocortical pathways.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Neuroanatomy

Background:

  • The hippocampal formation has dorsal and ventral divisions, with distinct roles in cognition and emotion.
  • Ventral subiculum projections to the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) are known, but dorsal subiculum (dSUB) connections are poorly understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the connectivity between the dorsal subiculum (dSUB) and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC).
  • To identify specific targets and neuronal populations within the mPFC receiving dSUB input.

Main Methods:

  • Electrophysiology and optogenetics were used in acute brain slices.
  • Projections from the dSUB to various mPFC regions were traced and functionally assessed.

Main Results:

  • The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is the primary target of dSUB projections within the mPFC.
  • dSUB projections target both excitatory and inhibitory neurons in the ACC.
  • Prelimbic and infralimbic areas of the PFC also receive input from the dSUB.

Conclusions:

  • Novel region- and layer-specific connections between the dSUB and mPFC have been identified.
  • These findings challenge existing anatomical models of hippocampocortical wiring.
  • The study refines the understanding of the neural circuitry underlying cognitive and emotional processing.
