Summary

This study presents a new surgical technique using dermal areolar flaps to correct inverted nipples. The procedure is safe, effective, and results in excellent aesthetic outcomes with minimal scarring.

Background:

Nipple inversion, a condition where the nipple is below the areola plane, causes functional and cosmetic issues.
Surgical repair for severe cases traditionally involves suture or flap techniques.
This study introduces an alternative surgical technique for inverted nipple correction.

Purpose of the Study:

To present and evaluate a novel surgical technique for correcting inverted nipples using two cross dermal areolar flaps.
To assess the safety, efficacy, and aesthetic outcomes of this alternative repair method.

Main Methods:

A retrospective case series of 15 patients with congenital inverted nipples operated between January 2010 and January 2016.
The surgical technique involved releasing the inverted nipple by severing underlying fibrous tissue bands and canaliculi, followed by reconstruction with two cross dermal areolar flaps.
Follow-up ranged from 8 to 16 months (mean 13 months).

Main Results:

No surgical complications such as infection, hematoma, sensory disturbance, or nipple necrosis were reported.
One case of unilateral recurrence occurred postoperatively but was successfully reoperated using the same technique.
All patients achieved adequate nipple projection and expressed satisfaction with the aesthetic results.

Conclusions:

The presented cross dermal areolar flap technique is a reliable, simple, safe, and effective method for correcting inverted nipples.
The technique offers improved aesthetic results due to scar alignment at the nipple-areola junction, with no apparent scarring.
This method is suitable for all types of inverted nipples as a primary surgical procedure.
