Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

Summary

Parkinson's disease (PD) impairs visual motion perception, worsening with disease progression. Early-stage patients showed no deficits, but mid- and late-stage patients exhibited significant visual perception impairments.

  • Parkinson's disease (PD) is primarily known as a motor disorder, but sensory dysfunctions, particularly in visual perception, significantly contribute to disability.
  • Visual motion perception is crucial for daily activities, and its impairment can exacerbate PD symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of Parkinson's disease duration and therapies (levodopa, deep brain stimulation) on vision-based motion perception.
  • To analyze visual displacement perception independently of motor effects.

Main Methods:

  • A computerized graphical tool was used for psychometric analysis of visual displacement perception in 37 PD patients (early, mid, late-stage) and 15 controls.
  • Movement-independent testing isolated perceptual deficits. Weber's fraction assessed perceptual linearity.

Main Results:

  • Individuals with PD showed significant visual perceptual impairments compared to controls.
  • Early-stage PD patients were unimpaired. Mid-stage patients had impairments at larger reference magnitudes; late-stage patients were impaired at both tested magnitudes.
  • Levodopa and deep brain stimulation did not significantly alter absolute displacement perception.

Conclusions:

  • Visual processing abnormalities in Parkinson's disease increase with disease progression.
  • These visual deficits may contribute to non-motor PD symptoms like bradykinesia and visuospatial deficits.
