Aneurysm II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies01:21

Aneurysm II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

55
Thoracic, aortic arch and abdominal aneurysms are significant vascular conditions that can present with various clinical manifestations and lead to serious complications. Understanding these manifestations and the appropriate diagnostic studies is essential for effective management and treatment.Thoracic Aortic AneurysmsThoracic aortic aneurysms often remain asymptomatic until they reach a size that impinges on adjacent structures. They typically cause deep, diffuse chest pain that radiates to...

Pathophysiology of Diabetes01:20

Pathophysiology of Diabetes

2.2K
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia. The four categories of diabetes are type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, other specific types of diabetes, and gestational diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is characterized by autoimmune-mediated destruction of pancreatic β cells, with environmental factors potentially triggering this process in genetically susceptible individuals. Despite many not having a family history, certain genes increase susceptibility,...

Nursing Diagnosis

3.3K
Following assessment, a nursing diagnosis is the next step in the nursing process. It begins after the nurse has collected and recorded the patient data. The purpose of diagnosing is to identify how the client responds to actual or potential health processes, identify factors that bestow or that cause health problems, the etiologies, and identify resources or strengths the individual, group, or community can draw on to prevent or resolve problems.
The nursing diagnosis focuses on evidence-based...

Acute Pyelonephritis II: Diagnostic Studies and Management

79
Introduction:For diagnosing acute pyelonephritis, a comprehensive patient history is collected to identify symptoms such as dysuria, frequent or urgent urination, flank pain, or costovertebral angle (CVA) tenderness that may suggest a kidney infection.Physical ExaminationDuring the physical examination, CVA tenderness is assessed. This involves gentle percussion over the costovertebral angle, where tenderness often indicates a kidney infection.Diagnostic TestsUrinalysis: Used to identify white...

Diabetes Mellitus: Type 2 and Gestational01:22

Diabetes Mellitus: Type 2 and Gestational

3.5K
Type 2 diabetes, characterized by insulin resistance, arises when the insulin receptors on cells lose responsiveness to insulin, diminishing the cell's capacity to take up glucose, resulting in elevated blood glucose levels. To receive a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, a series of blood glucose tests are necessary to assess whether the blood glucose falls within normal parameters. If the result is out of the normal range, a patient may be diagnosed as prediabetic or diabetic, depending on the...

Summary

Neonatal dengue is often missed, resembling sepsis. High suspicion is crucial in infants born to mothers with fever, even if maternal tests are negative, as infant illness severity correlates with maternal disease.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Neonatology
  • Pediatric Virology

Background:

  • Neonatal dengue is an under-diagnosed condition.
  • It is frequently misdiagnosed as sepsis due to similar clinical presentations.
  • Low index of suspicion contributes to underdiagnosis.

Observation:

  • Two cases of neonatal dengue are reported.
  • Infants were born to mothers with febrile illness.
  • Maternal serology results were negative in these cases.

Findings:

  • Neonatal dengue requires a high index of suspicion in infants born to febrile mothers.
  • Maternal dengue disease severity positively correlates with neonatal illness severity.
  • Even with negative maternal serology, dengue should be considered.

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis and management of neonatal dengue are critical.
  • Increased awareness among clinicians is needed to improve diagnostic accuracy.
  • Understanding the maternal-fetal transmission dynamics of dengue is important for public health strategies.
