Introduction
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.

Uphill trail running significantly increases energy demand compared to treadmill running, evidenced by higher lactate levels and oxygen consumption. This study highlights differences in physiological responses between trail and treadmill exercise protocols.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • Compare cardiopulmonary variables during uphill field tests versus treadmill tests.
  • Investigate differences between trail runners and road runners in response to these tests.
  • Establish a specific testing protocol for trail runners.

Main Methods:

  • Ten male trail runners and ten male road runners participated.
  • Maximal incremental treadmill test at 1% incline.
  • Maximal incremental field test on a 16% incline hill with repeated high-intensity intervals.
  • Mobile cardiopulmonary testing unit used for ventilation and gas exchange measurements.

  • No significant differences in exercise capacity were found between trail and road runners.
