Leprosy with pellagroid features (a case report).

Background:

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae.
Pellagra is a condition caused by niacin deficiency, characterized by dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia.
The co-occurrence of leprosy and pellagroid features is uncommon.

Observation:

A patient presented with clinical signs suggestive of both leprosy and pellagra.
Bacteriological and histopathological examinations confirmed the diagnosis of leprosy.
The patient's skin lesions exhibited features resembling pellagra.

Findings:

A therapeutic trial using nicotinic acid, the primary treatment for pellagra, yielded no improvement in the patient's condition.
This suggests the pellagroid features observed were not solely due to niacin deficiency.
