Self-Schemas02:16

Self-Schemas

33.6K
In general, a schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Surveys02:16

Surveys

16.2K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture01:27

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

121
Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

One-Way ANOVA: Unequal Sample Sizes

6.0K
One-way ANOVA can be performed on three or more samples of unequal sizes. However, calculations get complicated when sample sizes are not always the same. So, while performing ANOVA with unequal samples size, the following equation is used:

Bias in Epidemiological Studies01:29

Bias in Epidemiological Studies

842
Biases can arise at various stages of research, from study design and data collection to analysis and interpretation. Recognizing and addressing these biases is essential to ensure the validity and reliability of epidemiological findings.Broadly speaking, biases in epidemiology fall into three main categories: selection bias, information bias, and confounding. A more detailed description of possible biases is:

Anorexia Nervosa01:28

Anorexia Nervosa

305
Anorexia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of weight gain, an unrelenting pursuit of thinness, and a distorted body image. It often leads to dangerously low body weight relative to an individual's age and height. This disorder is marked by significant physical and psychological consequences, making it one of the most life-threatening psychiatric illnesses.
Symptoms and Physical Effects
Individuals with anorexia nervosa commonly exhibit extreme...

Summary

Adequate kitchen facilities were common in low-income families, but only a kitchen table was linked to better child diet quality. Specific items like can openers and measuring spoons were associated with poorer nutrient intake.

Area of Science:

  • Nutrition Science
  • Public Health
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Kitchen adequacy is a potential social determinant of child diet quality.
  • Understanding these associations is crucial for targeted interventions in diverse, low-income populations.
  • Previous research has not fully explored kitchen facility variations across diverse ethnic groups.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine kitchen adequacy in a racially/ethnically diverse, low-income sample.
  • To investigate the associations between kitchen facilities and child diet quality.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 150 families with children aged 5-7 years.
  • Recruitment through primary care clinics across diverse ethnic groups (non-Hispanic white, Black, Hispanic, Native American, Hmong, Somali).
  • Assessment of 20 kitchen items and child diet quality, including sodium and added sugar intake.

Main Results:

  • Over 85% of families possessed adequate kitchen facilities (15 of 20 items).
  • Only a kitchen table was significantly associated with higher overall child diet quality.
  • Children in households with can openers and measuring spoons consumed more sodium and added sugars, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • While basic kitchen facilities are generally adequate, specific items may influence nutrient intake.
  • The presence of a kitchen table may support healthier eating patterns in children.
  • Targeted nutritional guidance considering specific kitchen tools is warranted for low-income, diverse families.
