Steps in Outbreak Investigation01:18

Steps in Outbreak Investigation

261
In the ever-evolving field of public health, statistical analysis serves as a cornerstone for understanding and managing disease outbreaks. By leveraging various statistical tools, health professionals can predict potential outbreaks, analyze ongoing situations, and devise effective responses to mitigate impact. For that to happen, there are a few possible stages of the analysis:

Issues And Trends In Healthcare Delivery System01:29

Issues And Trends In Healthcare Delivery System

5.9K
The issues and trends in healthcare delivery are constantly changing. The COVID-19 pandemic is one recent issue that wreaked havoc on healthcare systems, causing a shortage of healthcare workers, high demand for medicines and supplies, and increased medical expenditure due to a lack of insurance. Other issues include rising healthcare costs and care fragmentation.
Cost Containment
Payment for healthcare services has historically promoted adoption of costly and often unnecessary or inefficient...

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms-SNPs

17.0K
A single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP is a single nucleotide variation at a specific genomic position in a large population. It is the most prevalent type of sequence variation found in the human genome. Point mutations that occur in more than 1% of the population qualify as SNPs. These are present once every 1000 nucleotides on an average in the human genome. Replacement of a purine with another purine (A/G) or a pyrimidine with another pyrimidine (C/T) is known as a transition. In contrast,...

Statistical Software for Data Analysis and Clinical Trials

969
Statistical software is pivotal in data analysis and clinical trials by providing tools to analyze data, draw conclusions, and make predictions. These software packages range from simple data management applications to complex analytical platforms, supporting various statistical tests, models, and simulation techniques. Their significance lies in their ability to handle vast amounts of data with precision and efficiency, enabling researchers to validate hypotheses, identify trends, and make...

Sensitivity, Specificity, and Predicted Value

843
In healthcare diagnostics, laboratory tests play a crucial role in identifying and diagnosing a wide range of medical conditions. However, interpreting test results is not always straightforward. An abnormal test result does not always confirm the presence of a disease, just as a normal result does not guarantee its absence. To assess the reliability of these diagnostic tools, healthcare practitioners rely on two key statistical indicators: sensitivity and specificity.
Sensitivity is the...

Area of Science:

  • Health Informatics
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated rapid adaptation of healthcare systems, including telehealth.
  • Existing telehealth systems lacked structured data extraction for critical COVID-19 information.
  • Need for structured data to support clinical care, research, and predictive analytics for COVID-19 management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a system for capturing structured COVID-19 information from telehealth notes.
  • To create natural language processing (NLP) tools for extracting key data points (exposure, risk factors, symptoms).
  • To build predictive analytics for SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic test results and optimize testing strategies.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a dedicated data mart and an NLP application prototype in a 10-day sprint.
  • Combined reused components with expert-crafted dictionaries and rules for the NLP application.
  • Deployed the NLP application as a Web service for hourly data processing.
  • Utilized extracted information to develop algorithms for predicting SARS-CoV-2 test results.

Main Results:

  • The NLP application achieved good accuracy with 85.8% recall and 81.5% precision.
  • Predictive analytics provided data-driven COVID-19 testing advice with 81%-92% sensitivity.
  • Enabled pooled testing for SARS-CoV-2 with a 90%-91% negative predictive value, reducing tests by approximately 63%.

Conclusions:

  • The developed data mart and NLP application successfully facilitated data-driven patient advising.
  • The system enabled efficient pooled testing strategies for SARS-CoV-2.
  • This approach demonstrated the value of NLP in enhancing COVID-19 response and resource allocation.
