Background:

  • The establishment of the first public sector bone bank in Pakistan at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) in Karachi.
  • The bone bank was a collaborative effort with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dow University of Health Sciences/Civil Hospital, Karachi (CHK), commencing operations in May 2015.
  • This initiative aimed to address the need for indigenously produced bone grafts for orthopedic procedures within Pakistan.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To document the experience of establishing and operating a bone bank in Pakistan.
  • To detail the procurement, processing, and storage of bone grafts.
  • To report on the clinical application and outcomes of indigenously sourced bone allografts.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of bone graft procurement, processing, and storage data from May 2015 over a 4-year period.
  • Analysis of donor demographics, bone graft types, microbiological cultures, and transplantation records.
  • Evaluation of postoperative complications in patients receiving bone allografts.

Main Results:

  • A total of 93 bone grafts were preserved; 56 from males and 37 from females, with a mean donor age of 55.9 years.
  • Femoral heads constituted the majority of grafts (68). Microbiological contamination was found in 19.35% of grafts, leading to their discard.
  • 51 grafts were transplanted locally, and 9 were donated to other hospitals. Postoperative infection rates were low at 3.92%.

Conclusions:

  • The establishment of a bone bank in a public sector hospital in Pakistan is feasible and successful.
  • Indigenously produced bone allografts can be safely and effectively used in various orthopedic procedures.
  • The positive outcomes have increased confidence among orthopedic surgeons in utilizing bone allografts, promoting wider application in the country.
