Summary

Immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS) is a safe procedure with minimal complications. This study found good visual outcomes and refractive results following ISBCS guidelines.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and outcomes of immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS).
  • To assess complication rates and visual acuities following ISBCS at a Canadian academic teaching center.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study of 2003 patients (4006 eyes) undergoing ISBCS.
  • Data collected included intraoperative and postoperative complications, visual acuities (UCVA, PHVA), and autorefraction.
  • Patients received topical anesthesia between January 2019 and December 2019.

  • Low complication rates: 0.3% posterior capsule ruptures, 0.2% partial zonulysis.
  • No cases of endophthalmitis or toxic anterior segment syndrome reported.
  • Mean 5-week postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCVA) was 20/33, pinhole visual acuity (PHVA) was 20/28, with a mean spherical equivalent of -0.21 diopters.

  • The study demonstrated a low incidence of complications, with no bilateral-specific adverse events.
  • Good visual and refractive outcomes support the continued use of ISBCS.
