Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

124
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Methods Of Healthcare Delivery System01:26

Methods Of Healthcare Delivery System

3.7K
At the different levels of the healthcare system, we see varying methods of healthcare used. These methods include managed care systems, case management, and primary healthcare.
Managed Care System:
The managed care system is designed to control the cost while maintaining the quality of care. The patient's care from admission to discharge is planned by the primary care provider or the case manager, also known as the gatekeeper. In a managed care system, the number of care providers is...

Statistical Methods for Analyzing Epidemiological Data

635
Epidemiological data primarily involves information on specific populations' occurrence, distribution, and determinants of health and diseases. This data is crucial for understanding disease patterns and impacts, aiding public health decision-making and disease prevention strategies. The analysis of epidemiological data employs various statistical methods to interpret health-related data effectively. Here are some commonly used methods:

Primary Healthcare Services01:30

Primary Healthcare Services

1.6K
Primary care promotes wellness and prevents disease. This care includes health promotion, education, protection (such as immunizations), early disease screening, and environmental considerations. Settings providing this type of healthcare include physician offices, public health clinics, school nursing, and community health nursing.

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

12.8K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Study Designs in Epidemiology01:20

Study Designs in Epidemiology

522
Epidemiological study designs are fundamental tools for investigating the distribution, determinants, and control of health conditions in populations. They help researchers understand the relationships between exposures and outcomes, and they broadly fall into two categories: "observational" and "experimental" studies.
Observational studies are those where the researcher does not intervene but rather observes natural variations. They include cross-sectional, cohort, and...

Summary

This study shows that the Enterprise Community Healthy Start (ECHS) program is linked to improved prenatal care. This enhanced evaluation method, using linked data, is feasible for other Healthy Start programs.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Maternal and Child Health
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Community Healthy Start program evaluations often lack robust data and rigorous designs.
  • This study introduces an enhanced methodological approach for evaluating such programs.
  • The approach utilizes local program data linked with population-level datasets for external comparison.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the Enterprise Community Healthy Start (ECHS) program in two rural Georgia counties.
  • To describe an enhanced methodological approach for program evaluation.
  • To assess the association between ECHS participation and maternal health indicators and pregnancy outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Linked ECHS program data with birth records and the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS).
  • Included 869 women who delivered live births in Burke and McDuffie counties (2010-2011).
  • Employed multivariate logistic regressions with and without propensity score methods.

Main Results:

  • ECHS participants had a positive association with receiving adequate or adequate plus prenatal care (p < 0.05).
  • No statistically significant associations were found for other health behaviors, healthcare access, or pregnancy outcomes.
  • Propensity score weighting yielded similar results to unweighted models.

Conclusions:

  • Rigorous evaluation of local Healthy Start programs is feasible using linked PRAMS and birth records.
  • This enhanced approach, incorporating population-based external comparison and propensity scores, can be applied in other jurisdictions.
  • The findings support the effectiveness of the ECHS program in improving prenatal care access.
