Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past.

  • The precise extent and mechanisms by which global warming will alter neurological practice remain largely unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of ambient temperatures and human migration on the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of neurological disorders.
  • To synthesize existing research on the relationship between climate change factors and neurological conditions.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed and Scopus from January 2000 to December 2020.
  • Studies focused on Alzheimer's and non-Alzheimer's dementia, epilepsy, headache/migraine, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, stroke, and tick-borne encephalitis.
  • The search specifically targeted human studies examining the influence of ambient temperatures and human migration.

Main Results:

  • Out of 93 included studies, 84 focused on ambient temperatures and nine on migration.
  • Most temperature-related studies indicated a link between increased temperatures and higher mortality/morbidity.
  • Migration studies yielded more ambiguous results, and no studies adequately addressed the future impact on neurological practice due to global warming and migration.

Conclusions:

  • Evidence suggests climate change will impact the practice of major neurological disorders in the near future.
  • Significant heterogeneity in study methodologies, outcomes, and confounders was observed.
  • There is an urgent need for well-designed studies, particularly from low-income countries, to address these critical issues.
