Post-COVID-19 interstitial lung disease (PC-ILD) is an emerging complication. Early identification and management through proactive follow-up are crucial for survivors of severe COVID-19 pneumonia.
Area of Science:
- Pulmonology
- Infectious Diseases
- Radiology
Background:
- Sequelae of COVID-19 pandemic present challenges, including pulmonary fibrosis causing breathlessness.
- Current management for post-COVID-19 pulmonary fibrosis is primarily symptomatic and underexplored.
- Pulmonary complications like interstitial lung disease (ILD) are a growing concern in COVID-19 survivors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To highlight the emerging threat of post-COVID-19 interstitial lung disease (PC-ILD) in individuals recovering from COVID-19.
- To present a case series illustrating the development of PC-ILD.
- To emphasize the need for increased clinical attention to this complication.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of patients admitted with severe COVID-19.
- Inclusion criteria: prolonged symptoms and signs suggestive of pulmonary fibrosis post-hospitalization.
- High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) used for diagnosing pulmonary fibrosis/ILD in three identified patients.
Main Results:
- Three laboratory-proven SARS-CoV-2 positive cases developed pulmonary fibrosis with traction bronchiectasis, identified as PC-ILD.
- Two patients survived with improved oxygen saturation at three-month follow-up.
- One patient experienced fatal arrhythmia.
Conclusions:
- Post-COVID-19 interstitial lung disease (PC-ILD) is an emerging complication of COVID-19 pneumonia.
- Proactive follow-up programs are essential for early detection and management of PC-ILD.
- Addressing this potential epidemic requires systematic monitoring of COVID-19 survivors.

The primary cause for the onset of COPD is cigarette smoking and exposure to air pollution. These hazardous factors initiate a chain reaction within the lungs, resulting in chronic inflammation, damage to the airways, and a...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-III: Symptoms and Complications.
Symptoms of COPD can be classified as primary or systemic. Primary symptoms relate to reduced airflow, while systemic or extrapulmonary symptoms relate to COPD's broader impact on the body.
Primary Symptoms of COPD:
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Smoking is a primary risk factor for COPD, with over 80% of patients having a history of it. Patients typically experience progressive dyspnea or labored breathing, frequent coughing, and recurrent pulmonary infections. Many eventually succumb to respiratory failure, characterized by...
