Background:

  • Mental pain (MP) is a transdiagnostic feature linked to depression, suicidal ideation, and emotion dysregulation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and diagnostic role of MP in patients with eating disorders (EDs).
  • To determine if MP can discriminate between patients with varying levels of ED and depressive symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy-one ED patients and 90 controls completed questionnaires including the Clinical Assessment Scale for MP (CASMP) and Mental Pain Questionnaire (MPQ).
  • ED patients also underwent assessments for depression (BDI-II, CID-20) and eating attitudes (EAT-40).
  • A two-step cluster analysis was employed to identify predictors of ED and depression severity.
