Hierarchy of Motor Control01:18

Hierarchy of Motor Control

4.2K
The hierarchy of motor control refers to the different levels of organization and processing involved in controlling movement in the body. These levels range from higher cortical areas involved in planning and decision-making to lower spinal cord reflexes that respond automatically to external stimuli.

Area of Science:

  • Road safety research
  • Driver education evaluation
  • Public health interventions

Background:

  • Young drivers (YDs) face disproportionately high rates of motor vehicle crashes, injuries, and fatalities in the US.
  • In 2018, YDs aged 16-20 accounted for nearly 9% of US traffic fatalities.
  • The Nevada Advanced Driver Training (ADT) program targets YDs to mitigate these risks through specialized training.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the Nevada ADT program in enhancing safe driving knowledge and behaviors among young drivers.
  • To identify potential improvements for future ADT program efficiency, delivery, and evaluation strategies.

Main Methods:

  • An exploratory mixed-methods outcome evaluation utilizing secondary data from December 2018 and March 2019.
  • Matched pretest/posttest and questionnaire data from high school students (N=649) with driver's licenses or permits.
  • Statistical analyses included t-tests, correlation, and chi-squared tests; qualitative analysis involved content and thematic analysis.

Main Results:

  • Participant knowledge of safe driving behaviors significantly increased, with mean scores rising from 43.9% (pretest) to 74.9% (posttest).
  • The ADT program demonstrated a positive impact on the target population's safe driving knowledge and behaviors.

Conclusions:

  • The Nevada ADT program successfully met its objectives for improving safe driving knowledge and behaviors in young drivers.
  • Findings support the program's efficacy and provide a basis for future ADT intervention development and evaluation.
