Bones of the Upper Limb: Radius

The radius is longer of the two bones that make up the human antebrachium or forearm. At the proximal end, the radius articulates with the capitulum of the humerus and the radial notch of the ulna to form the elbow joint. At the distal end, the radius articulates with the ulna via the ulnar notch, forming the distal radioulnar joint. Distally, the radius also attaches to the carpal wrist bones (scaphoid and lunate) to form the radiocarpal joint.

Background:

Accurate gender identification is crucial in forensic investigations.
The mandibular ramus offers potential morphological markers for sex determination.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of mandibular ramus measurements for gender identification in the Haryana population.
To establish anthropometric data for forensic applications.

Main Methods:

A sample of 100 patients underwent panoramic radiological examination.
Key mandibular ramus parameters, including maximum ramus breadth, minimum ramus breadth, condylar height, projective height of the ramus, and coronoid height, were measured.
Data were analyzed using SPSS software.

Main Results:

Significant differences were observed between males and females in maximum ramus width, minimum ramus width, condylar height, and coronoid height.
Coronoid height showed a particularly strong statistical significance in differentiating genders.

Conclusions:

The mandibular ramus exhibits sexual dimorphism, making it a reliable indicator for gender assessment.
Measurements of the mandibular ramus can be integrated into forensic investigations for identification purposes.
