Background:

Natural disasters like bushfires significantly impact community health services.
Limited research exists on the specific roles pharmacists undertake during such crises.
The 2019/2020 Black Summer Bushfires presented unique challenges to Australian healthcare providers.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the multifaceted role of Australian community pharmacists during the Black Summer Bushfires.
To identify the challenges and contributions of pharmacists in a natural disaster setting.

Main Methods:

Qualitative study involving semi-structured phone interviews with ten community pharmacists.
Thematic analysis of interview transcripts using NVivo software.

Main Results:

Six key themes emerged: collaboration, trauma/mental health, power/communication issues, acute presentations, triage, and emergency prescribing.
Pharmacists collaborated with healthcare professionals and the community, offering triage, chronic disease advice, and acute care, including mental health support.
Operations were often conducted without essential utilities like power and communication, necessitating adaptive strategies.

Conclusions:

Pharmacists require enhanced mental health support and training for disaster situations.
Provisional prescribing privileges and clearer emergency legislation are needed for pharmacists.
Further research should investigate pharmacist roles and decision-making autonomy during natural disasters.
