Inflammatory Bowel Disease V: Surgical Management

262
Surgical interventions for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, are essential in managing symptoms and addressing complications. The selection of surgical procedures is contingent upon the specific conditions and complications that stem from these illnesses.
Here are some common surgical interventions for IBD:

Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

230
Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.
Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a flexible sigmoidoscope equipped with a light source and camera to examine the rectum and sigmoid colon. The procedure involves inserting the tube through the anus...

Summary

Women remain underrepresented in surgical fellowships, with fewer female trainees and educators in gastrointestinal surgery. This disparity may stem from the low number of female program directors and faculty in these specialized surgical fields.

Area of Science:

  • Surgical Education
  • Medical Training
  • Gender Disparities in Medicine

Background:

  • Gender disparities in surgical leadership are a growing concern.
  • Understanding these disparities in fellowship programs is crucial for addressing the issue.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze gender representation among trainees and faculty in surgical fellowship programs.
  • To identify potential factors contributing to gender disparities in surgical leadership.

Main Methods:

  • Data from the Fellowship Council (FC) database (2015-2019) were analyzed.
  • Included fellowship type, program director (PD), associate program director (APD), faculty, and fellow information.
  • Gender was determined through personal knowledge or public biographical data.

Main Results:

  • 1023 fellows and 221 programs were analyzed.
  • Female fellows in Advanced GI/MIS and GI/MIS/bariatric programs increased slightly (28% to 31% and 29% to 38%, respectively).
  • Female representation was low: 13.6% PDs, 18.3% APDs, and 19.9% faculty. Advanced GI/MIS had the fewest female PDs (9.3%).

Conclusions:

  • Women are underrepresented in gastrointestinal surgery fellowships as both trainees and educators.
  • Underrepresentation of female program directors and faculty likely contributes to fewer female fellows.
  • Further research is needed to statistically prove the link between leadership and trainee underrepresentation.
