Summary

Virtual reality (VR) enhances speech perception by incorporating visual cues, bridging the gap between clinical tests and real-world performance. This study shows VR audiology tools are feasible for clinical use, especially for hearing aid users.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of virtual space (VS) on speech performance.
  • To assess the feasibility of using VS as a speech test instrument.
  • To determine if visual cues improve speech recognition.

Main Methods:

  • 30 normal-hearing and 25 hearing-impaired individuals completed the Korean Hearing in Noise Test (K-HINT) in conventional and VR settings (PC and head-mounted display).
  • Tests were conducted at various signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) with and without hearing aids for the hearing-impaired group.
  • Participant feedback was collected via questionnaire regarding the VR experience.

  • Visual information significantly improved speech performance for both groups.

  • Participants favored visual elements but found the VR headset heavy.
