  • Its exact cause is unknown, but cerebellar structural defects are suspected.
  • This study investigates neuropathological changes in the cerebellum of blepharospasm patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine cerebellar pathology in human subjects with blepharospasm.
  • To compare neuropathological findings in blepharospasm patients with healthy controls.
  • To identify specific cellular changes in the cerebellum associated with blepharospasm.

Main Methods:

  • Autopsy-obtained cerebellar tissue from 7 blepharospasm patients and 9 controls.
  • Histological analysis using Nissl and silver stains.
  • Quantification of Purkinje neurons, torpedo bodies, and other cellular features.

  • A significant decrease in Purkinje neuron density was observed.
  • Reduced density of torpedo bodies (Purkinje neuron axonal swellings) was noted.
