Area of Science:

  • Dental Education
  • Prosthodontics
  • Simulation-Based Training

Background:

  • Complete denture (CD) flange adjustment is a critical post-insertion procedure.
  • Effective training methods are essential for developing student competencies in this area.
  • Current training may not fully prepare students for clinical application.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce a novel simulation model for complete denture flange adjustment training.
  • To assess the impact of this simulation model on dental students' competencies.
  • To evaluate improvements across knowledge, cognitive, and psychomotor skill domains.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 100 fourth-year dental students was divided into control and test groups.
  • The test group received simulation training using modified working casts, in addition to didactic instruction.
  • Both groups performed flange adjustments on patients, with skills assessed using a checklist.

Main Results:

  • The test group demonstrated significantly higher overall performance (57.94%) compared to the control group (30.14%) (p < 0.001).
  • Competency increased in most knowledge and all cognitive skill tasks for the test group.
  • Improvements in psychomotor skills were observed for about half of the tasks, with specific gender-based differences noted.

Conclusions:

  • The simulation model significantly enhanced students' overall clinical skills for complete denture post-insertion maintenance.
  • Simulation training allows students to practice and refine flange adjustment techniques before clinical patient care.
  • The model shows promise for improving dental student proficiency in complete denture procedures.
