Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Palliative Care
  • Healthcare Management

Background:

  • Increasing demand for palliative care (PC) necessitates expanding the interdisciplinary workforce.
  • A shortage of PC specialists requires innovative training solutions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of individual practice improvement projects (PIPs) within a longitudinal palliative care training curriculum (Coleman Palliative Medicine Training Program-2).

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-seven interdisciplinary clinicians developed PIPs focused on institutional needs.
  • Participants engaged in monthly meetings and bi-annual conferences for feedback and process improvement.
  • Mentorship was provided throughout the project duration.

Main Results:

  • 30 PIPs were implemented across 7 key themes, including staff and patient education, care quality, and program development.
  • Most projects (16/30) were sustained post-training.
  • Participant feedback on mentorship was highly positive.

Conclusions:

  • The Coleman Palliative Medicine Training Program-2 effectively utilized PIPs to enhance skills for interdisciplinary palliative care learners.
  • PIP participation, supported by administration, can drive operational improvements in palliative care settings.
