Summary

Sexual dysfunction is common in women with multiple system atrophy (MSA). This study found significantly lower sexual function scores and higher rates of genital hyposensitivity in women with MSA compared to controls.

Background:

  • Multiple system atrophy (MSA) diagnosis requires autonomic failure, but criteria for women are less defined than for men.
  • Current diagnostic criteria for MSA lack specific measures for female sexual dysfunction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of sexual dysfunction in women diagnosed with multiple system atrophy.
  • To address the diagnostic gap concerning female sexual dysfunction in MSA.

Main Methods:

  • Administered the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire to women with MSA and age-matched controls.
  • Interviewed participants to assess the presence of "genital hyposensitivity."

Main Results:

  • Women with MSA (n=25) had significantly lower FSFI scores (15.4) compared to controls (n=42; 26.1).
  • The most affected sexual domains in MSA patients were desire, arousal, and lubrication.
  • Genital hyposensitivity was reported by 56% of women with MSA versus 9% of controls.

Conclusions:

  • Sexual dysfunction is highly prevalent in women with multiple system atrophy.
  • Clinical evaluation of women with potential MSA should include screening for sexual domain disturbances.
