Summary

Preterm children show deficits in visuospatial skills. The Pascual graphomotor test (PGMt) effectively identifies these visuospatial anomalies, even when non-verbal intelligence quotient (IQ) is normal.

Area of Science:

  • Developmental Pediatrics
  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Preterm children often exhibit impaired visuospatial functions compared to full-term peers.
  • The Pascual graphomotor test (PGMt) assesses graphomotor aptitude, a component of non-verbal intelligence.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare visuospatial functions in preterm and full-term children.
  • To evaluate the Pascual graphomotor test's (PGMt) specificity in detecting visuospatial disorders compared to non-verbal intelligence quotient (IQ).

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 135 children (59 preterm, 76 full-term) aged 5-11 years without cognitive delay.
  • Assessment included clinical history, neurological examination, Toni 2 (IQ) test, and Pascual's graphomotor test (PGMt).

Main Results:

  • Preterm children scored significantly lower on both IQ (117.4 vs. 125.0) and graphomotor quotient (GQ) (76.8 vs. 98.3).
  • Despite a positive correlation between IQ and GQ, multivariate analysis confirmed that GQ differences persisted independently of IQ.
  • The graphomotor quotient (GQ) showed statistically and clinically significant differences between groups (p=0.001).

Conclusions:

  • The graphomotor quotient (GQ) is a valuable screening tool for visuospatial anomalies in children.
  • PGMt specifically identifies visuoperceptive disorders, irrespective of a child's non-verbal cognitive level.
