  • Case study data from two families (n=2 dyads per family) were collected over two 12-hour days.
  • Simultaneously, linguistic input was captured using the LENA wearable audio recording device.

Findings:

  • Significant variability in caregiver-child proximity was observed within and across families.
  • Increased time spent in close proximity correlated with higher exposure to adult words and conversational turns.
  • Proximity variations are associated with, but not synonymous with, the quantity of child language exposure.

Implications:

  • TotTag offers a new method for studying early caregiver-child interactions in real-world contexts.
  • Findings suggest physical proximity is a key contextual factor influencing language acquisition opportunities.
  • This research can inform interventions aimed at optimizing caregiver-child engagement for developmental benefits.
