Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Hematology

Background:

  • Hemorrhagic neuropathy is an extremely rare condition characterized by bleeding into or around peripheral nerves, forming intraneural or extraneural hematomas.
  • It is typically associated with iatrogenic/inherited coagulopathies or nerve-targeting injections.

Observation:

  • A case of sciatic nerve palsy developed secondary to warfarin anticoagulant therapy is presented.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) confirmed a sciatic nerve hematoma.

Findings:

  • Warfarin was withdrawn, leading to symptomatic improvement in the patient.
  • Follow-up ultrasound demonstrated resolution of the sciatic nerve hematoma and normalization of nerve diameter.

Implications:

  • This case highlights nerve hematoma as a potential complication of anticoagulation therapy.
  • Prompt recognition and early intervention, including medication adjustment, are crucial for favorable patient outcomes.
