Maggots, or fly larvae, can cause skin infections. This case highlights an unusual maggot infestation at a colostomy site in a patient with advanced rectal cancer, emphasizing stoma site monitoring.

  • Myiasis is a parasitic infestation caused by dipteran fly larvae (maggots).

Observation:

  • A patient with advanced, inoperable rectal cancer presented with nonspecific pain, discomfort, and foul-smelling discharge from their colostomy site.
  • Upon examination, the cause of the symptoms was identified as a maggot infestation surrounding the colostomy.

Findings:

  • The infestation was successfully treated by the removal of the maggots.
  • The patient's symptoms, including pain and discharge, were alleviated post-removal.
