Endoscopic laser treatment of superficial esophageal cancer

Recently, lasers are being increasingly applied in the treatment of cancers of various organs, including the esophagus. In the present multiinstitutional series, two lesions in two cases were successfully treated with the high-energy Nd-YAG laser and 15 lesions in 14 cases were treated with the low-energy argon dye laser following photosensitization with hematoporphyrin derivative. Although satisfactory results were obtained in most cases, it was concluded that the equipment and photosensitizer require improvements.
