Area of Science:

  • Integrative Medicine
  • Otolaryngology
  • Infectious Disease

Background:

  • Auricular acupuncture is utilized as an alternative therapy for smoking cessation.
  • The procedure involves penetrating the auricle, the external ear structure.

Observation:

  • A patient developed auricular chondritis after undergoing auricular acupuncture for smoking cessation.
  • The condition persisted despite prompt medical intervention, leading to significant ear morbidity and deformity.

Findings:

  • Auricular chondritis is a potential complication of auricular acupuncture.
  • The inflammation can result in long-term ear instability and cosmetic deformity.
  • Acupuncture should be viewed as a form of penetrating trauma with risks of perichondritis or chondritis.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should counsel patients on the risks associated with auricular acupuncture.
  • Further research is needed to understand and mitigate the risk of chondritis following acupuncture.
  • Prompt diagnosis and management are crucial for patients presenting with post-acupuncture auricular complications.
