Summary

During the COVID-19 lockdown in Ireland, cycling attendances to the emergency department (ED) did not increase. Cyclists injured during lockdown were less likely to be involved in motor vehicle collisions, suggesting potential road safety benefits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate changes in cycling-related emergency department (ED) attendances during the COVID-19 lockdown in Ireland.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective before-and-after study was conducted at a university hospital ED.
  • Cycling attendances during the lockdown period (March 13th-June 7th, 2020) were compared to pre-lockdown (January 1st-March 12th, 2020) and a 2019 control period (March 13th-June 7th, 2019).

Conclusions:

  • Injured cyclists during lockdown experienced fewer collisions with motor vehicles, potentially due to reduced traffic.
  • Findings suggest road-user segregation could enhance cyclist safety.
