C4 Pathway and CAM01:27

C4 Pathway and CAM

47.0K
Most plants use the C3 pathway for carbon fixation. However, some plants, such as sugar cane, corn, and cacti that grow in hot conditions, use alternative pathways to fix carbon and conserve energy loss due to photorespiration. Photorespiration is the process that occurs when the oxygen concentration is high. Under such conditions, the rubisco enzyme in the Calvin cycle binds O2 instead of CO2, which halts photosynthesis and consumes energy.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Science
  • Oncology
  • Digital Pathology

Background:

  • Cancer diagnosis and treatment are increasingly critical in African nations.
  • A significant shortage of pathologists hinders timely and accurate cancer diagnosis in Africa.
  • Efficient resource utilization is paramount for maximizing patient treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To demonstrate the use of telepathology to address the scarcity of pathologists in Cameroon.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of telepathology in improving cancer care efficiency.

Main Methods:

  • A telepathology system was implemented in a district hospital in Cameroon's Adamawa region.
  • Surgical biopsy slides were processed by a histotechnologist.
  • Digital slides were created using mobile phone photography and whole slide imaging (WSI) scanners.
  • Remote diagnosis was provided by a volunteer pathologist in Europe.

Main Results:

  • From 2018-2019, 101 patient specimens were diagnosed via mobile phone microscopy images.
  • From 2019-2020, 282 patient specimens were diagnosed using WSI digital transmission.
  • Telepathology facilitated remote diagnosis of cancer specimens.

Conclusions:

  • Whole slide imaging (WSI) for remote diagnosis of histology slides can enhance cancer treatment efficacy.
  • Telepathology can reduce overtreatment of tumors suspected of malignancy in resource-limited settings.
  • Telepathology offers a viable solution to pathologist shortages in under-resourced countries.
