Background:

  • Limited evidence exists for radiotherapy's effectiveness in treating painful lymph node metastases (PLM).
  • A subgroup analysis of a prospective observational study was conducted to evaluate radiotherapy for PLM.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of palliative radiotherapy for painful lymph node metastases (PLM).
  • To assess pain intensity and pain interference in patients receiving radiotherapy for PLM.

Main Methods:

  • A subgroup of 25 patients from a primary study of 302 patients receiving radiotherapy for painful tumors were analyzed.
  • The Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) short form was used to measure pain intensity and interference.
  • Pain response was assessed using the International Consensus Endpoint at baseline and at 1, 2, and 3 months post-radiotherapy.

Main Results:

  • 60% of patients (15 out of 25) experienced a pain response to radiotherapy for PLM.
  • Pain response rates were 66%, 67%, and 57% at 1, 2, and 3-month follow-ups, respectively.
  • Significant reductions in pain intensity and pain interference were observed at 1 month, with median index pain scores decreasing from 7 to 2.

Conclusions:

  • Palliative radiotherapy demonstrated effectiveness in improving pain intensity and reducing pain interference in patients with PLM.
  • Radiotherapy is a viable treatment option for managing painful lymph node metastases.
  • Further research may explore optimal radiotherapy strategies for PLM.
