Low doses of nitrite and nitrate, commonly found in supplements and vegetables, significantly increased choroidal neovascularization (CNV) lesions in mice. This suggests caution for nitrite/nitrate supplementation in elderly individuals susceptible to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
