Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. Viral Recombination

Cells are sometimes infected by more than one virus at once. When two viruses disassemble to expose their genomes for replication in the same cell, similar regions of their genomes can pair together and exchange sequences in a process called recombination. Alternatively, viruses with segmented genomes can swap segments in a process called reassortment.

Background:

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a group of zoonotic diseases caused by hantaviruses.
Seoul virus, a species of hantavirus, is known to infect rodents, particularly brown and black rats, and can be transmitted to humans.

Observation:

A case of HFRS was diagnosed in a woman in Scotland, UK.
The patient's infection was caused by Seoul virus.

Findings:

Whole-genome sequencing of the Seoul virus isolate revealed it belongs to a lineage exhibiting recent international expansion.
This expansion is strongly suspected to be driven by the global trade of pet rats.

Implications:

This case highlights the potential for Seoul virus to emerge in new geographic regions, including the UK.
The findings underscore the importance of monitoring the pet trade for zoonotic disease risks.
Further research into hantavirus surveillance and control measures in the context of international pet trafficking is warranted.
